It’s a concept record about forgiveness and it’s fucking brilliant. “The Joke” was rightfully the huge single off the record, being nominated for both song and record of the year during the 2019 Grammys, but songs like the album closer “Party of One” and the opener “Everytime I Hear that Song” hit every bit as hard. Every song on this record drips with Carlile’s blood, sweat, and tears as she puts herself out there in a way few songwriters do. It’s a very grand and personal statement record from one of the best songwriters in the world.
