They genuinely don’t make them like this anymore. Damien Chazelle’s 2016 musical about down on his luck jazz musician Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), and aspiring actress Mia (Emma Stone) is a wonderful love letter to the classic Hollywood musicals of yesterday that once that dominated theaters. The whole movie is a true joy to watch on screen and ended up being the one that cemented Ryan Gosling as one of the top acting stars in Hollywood in my head. It also naturally, boasts one of the better movie soundtracks of the decade with songs that are so catchy, most of them are still stuck in my head today. In a decade where most of the huge films were big budget block busters based on existing IPs, it’s refreshing to see some old time classic star vehicles break through to mainstream success.
