I think the biggest thing about this movie when it came out was all of the hype around Leo’s performance. And sure as hell it delivers. After 6 nominations, The Revenant is the movie that DiCaprio finally brought home his Oscar for. Sure he should have won for movies like The Wolf of Wall Street and The Aviator, but at the time this was far and away Leo’s best performance. It’s emotive and he really pushes himself to brink unlike anything he had done before or since this movie. But, this movie is a lot more than just a terrific DiCaprio performance. It’s a wonderful film about perseverance, forgiveness, and revenge. Fresh off his Best Director Oscar for 2014’s existential Best Picture winner Birdman, Alejandro G. Iñárritu made a sharp and rewarding left turn that’s both utterly brutal and beautiful.
